CNG vehicles are plying on roads since 2000, but some vehicles having CNG are facing technical problems.

Is the problem due to the negligence of factory fitted kits?
The answer is NO.

The main cause of the problem is CNG kits purchased from unauthorized dealers. More than 1 lakh vehicles have suffered fire cases due to CNG from fake CNG kits and/or fitments.

Mohan – The Mechanic is here to tell you the consequences of using fake CNG kit fitted in your vehicle and suggest you tips to overcome these problems.

Tip 1: Start your car only on petrol

Start your car on petrol and let it be idle for a while. Don’t switch to CNG even if your kit allows you to for at least one kilometer. This helps to lubricate the engine, and reduce wear and tear. If your car is equipped with a fake kit there are high chances of your car catching fire when you start the engine.

Tip 2: Service regularly

Perishable parts such as air filters take a beating on CNG, so get your vehicle serviced more frequently. If your service is due at 15,000 km, it’s better to get the service done when your vehicle reaches the 12,000km. This will spare you from the threat of a vehicle breakdown, due to simple issues like lack of engine oil or coolant.

Tip 3: Get CNG tuning done by a specialist

Always get the CNG kit tuned by a specialist. If your car has a factory fitted CNG kit, go to the authorized service center. At the hands of unqualified mechanics, your CNG cars can face have problems like increased engine vibration or irregular acceleration. There are also high chances of the mechanics replacing original kits with the fake one.

Tip 4: Replace spark plugs

Spark plugs meant for petrol vehicles wear out fast when driving on CNG. There are two ways you can combat this issue: either use special spark plugs meant for CNG cars or you could request your mechanic to reduce the gap between the metallic tip of your plug and the actual source of spark. Never go for fake spark plugs.

Tip 5: Never drive till tank is empty

The CNG cylinder’s pressure falls as it empties, and can cause the valve to explode. Also, replace the valves regularly and use only the original ones.

Cars are designed to run on petrol, so extra caution and care has to be taken on adding the CNG kit to keep your car healthy. These are the things that you should keep in mind while driving a CNG car.

Avoid buying a fake CNG kit; there are high chances of your car catching fire if any sort of leakage takes place.

Always prefer OEM (Car Manufacturer) fitted CNG Kits.

Stay Safe. Be Genuine Buy Genuine.

Counterfeited Airbag Prevention

Counterfeit Industry has been trying their hands in almost every automobile part and one of their latest targets is Airbags. These airbags look identical to the certified and genuine airbag systems—including bearing the branding of major automakers. Tests have shown consistent malfunctioning ranging from non-deployment of the air bag to the expulsion of metal shrapnel during deployment.

Mohan – The Mechanic is here to share some tips with you on how to protect yourself from counterfeit airbags.

Who is at Risk?

  • Consumers who have had air bags replaced within the past three years at a repair shop that is not part of a new car dealership.

  • Consumers who have purchased a used car that may have sustained an air bag deployment before their purchase or have accidental history.
  • Consumers who own a car with a title branded salvage, rebuilt or reconstructed.
  • Consumers who have purchased replacement air bags from any non-certified sources, especially if they were purchased at significantly low prices.

What you can do to protect yourself from counterfeit airbags?

  • While purchasing pre-owned vehicles you need to check its accidental history. Vouch for clues that may have lead the owner to replace the airbags.
  • Ensure that only OEM certified airbags have been done. Contact the authorized dealer if needed.
  • Regarding the cost of inspection and replacement, if you have suspicion about an airbag that was replaced at a repair shop your insurance company recommended, contact your insurance company.
  • If you have purchased replaced airbags online, you may be covered for the expense by their “Buyer Protection” policy.

Counterfeiters work for money not quality. Beware of such parts as they may lead to fatal accidents.

SIAM Fighting FAKE at the 12th Auto Expo 2014

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) rolled up their sleeves to combat the issue of Counterfeiting of Auto-Parts by forming an Anti-Counterfeiting Group (ACG). The group was determined to educate and create awareness amongst public at large by spreading the word at the 12th Auto Expo – The Motor Show 2014.

In this SIAM initiative an online interactive activity called ‘Say it with a slogan’ was launched to connect with the young and tech savvy visitors. SIAM engaged visitors via three ‘SIAM Fighting Fake’ stalls which were placed at prime locations aroImageund the venue. Every stall had an interactive digital kiosk with Social Media integration to engage visitors in the campaign. Visitors were asked to share their slogan supporting use of only genuine parts and best of the slogans were rewarded on the spot.

A painting competition based on Real v/s Fake theme was also conducted at various schools in Delhi and Mumbai for kids of class 5th to 9th. The best of the paintings were rewarded and displayed at each of the three stalls.

Further to the above engagement activities three Pledge Walls were placed at the venue, two of which were Visitor Pledge Walls placed next to the stalls and a SIAM Pledge Wall placed near the VIP Lounge. The Visitor Pledge Wall motivated visitors to sign and promise to only use genuine spare parts for their vehicle. Industry Leaders, CEOs and Senior Officials such as Mr. Vikram Kirloskar, (President SIAM), Mr. Rajesh Bagga (Chairman SIAM ACG) and Mr. R S Kalsi (Co-Chairman SIAM ACG), Mr. Takashi Kikuchi (President ISUZU) and many more participated in the initiative by signing on the SIAM Pledge Wall.

Spreading the message in an entertaining and fun way always proves to be impactful, so was the Groovy, high-octane, professionally choreographed, crowd pulling dance performances based on Anti-Counterfeiting theme, staged on 8th and 9th February 2014. In support to our message of only opting for genuine parts, the performers displayed placards relaying the campaign message throughout the performance. An emcee acted as the voice of the activity, communicating the essence of the ACG campaign. Various freebies were also distributed, in all SIAM ACG activities, to the participants.

We urge you to join hands with SIAM and support this cause. Help us save the country’s economy from such fraudulent practices.

Let’s stop using Fake and promise to BE GENUINE-BUY GENUINE!!

I was ecstatic on my visit to the SIAM Fighting Fake stall!! How about you?
